3. A Cardinal Issue
There’s no question that Canada is a northern country. But the majority of Canadians don’t really live in the north.
The 49th Parallel is generally regarded as the border between Canada and the United States, but over 70% of Canadians live below it.
It has been joked that at the time the border was established, the British administration was so disinterested, that their input was simply to have someone put their fist on a map of North America and trace along the top of their knuckles, then down and up over their thumb. The actual border ended up remarkably similar. If we look at the border as a fist outline, Toronto, Canada’s largest city, is down between the thumb and forefinger and the top of the thumb is Maine.
Toronto is further south than London, Paris and Berlin, as well as seven US state capitals. It’s further south than the French Riviera.
One might challenge the slogan of the Toronto Raptors, We the North, but then again, We the East doesn’t have quite the same ring to it and besides, it’s all relative.
Anyway, those of us at Gericke-Nesbitt Regenerative Medicine should stick to what we know. We the Hyperbaric People.
